Synopsis
Atticus Noble, a sadistic admiral of a militaristic empire, arrives on the sunken moon of Veldt on behalf of the mother world, an interstellar empire fueled by centuries of conquest and war. He explains that his troops are hunting a group of rebels led by siblings Devra and Darrian Bloodaxe, and offers to buy the village's surplus grain. The leader of the Sindri village declines the offer, saying that they barely have enough to survive. Farmer Gunnar ignores earlier warnings from Sindri and Farmer Kora and suggests that the village may have some surplus. Noble kills Sindri and orders Gunnar to provide them with grain in ten weeks that would not leave the village enough to survive. Noble leaves, leaving a handful of soldiers and the robot "Jimmy" to oversee the harvest. After being bullied by a peer, Jimmy begins to become independent. One villager, Kora, finds the other soldiers preparing to rape a villager and kills them with the help of Jimmy, who has defected, and Aris, a soldier disgusted by his own comrade's actions. Kora warns the villagers that Noble will massacre the village once he returns if they don't mount a defense.
Kora and Gunnar travel to the port city of Providence to recruit warriors to defend the village, including Titus, a disgraced general of the Empire. Amid their travel, she uncovers to Gunnar that she once served the Domain as a warrior after being embraced and renamed Arthelais by Balisarius, the Empire's commander, after her family and wiped out the population of her home planet. She became the bodyguard of Mother World Princess Issa, who was expected to end the Empire's conquest. Despite her efforts, however, the royal family was murdered during Issa's coronation, and Balisarius subsequently declared himself regent before resuming their conquests.
Arriving in Providence, the pair meet smuggler and criminal Kai, who agrees to take them to recruit Tito. Along the way, Kai takes them to two other warriors: Tarak, an animal tamer, and Nemesis, a talented cybernetic-enhanced swordswoman. The bunch arrives at a gladiatorial field on a far off moon, where they discover Titus in a tanked daze.Titus initially refuses to join, but agrees when Kora suggests that he avenge his fallen soldiers. Using Gunnar's previous dealings with the Bloodaxes, they then arrive in Sharaan to meet them. Darrian agrees to defend the village and brings a handful of rebels, including Milius, while Devra and the rest of the rebellion leave Sharaan. After they leave, Noble arrives and wipes out its population as punishment for helping the rebels.
